Stovebuilder with new stove insert

Future prospects for stove builders

Future prospects for stove builders – do they exist, or is this a profession at risk of disappearing? A study conducted in 2013 by Prognos, one of the oldest economic research and consulting companies in Europe, examined the future of skilled trades. The result was remarkable.

38,000 new jobs through “green jobs” – this was the headline of the German Handwerksblatt. The basis for this statement was a study commissioned by the German Confederation of Skilled Crafts and the Central Association of German Crafts. A high volume of orders is expected as a result of measures to increase energy efficiency.

The skilled trades sector alone is involved in implementing the energy transition with around 30 different professions. Specialists with “green skills” are particularly in demand, for example for the maintenance and installation of new systems. Around 80 percent of craft businesses see this as one of their key areas of work – and this includes stove builders.

“Green job” stove builder – building fireplaces and stoves for a greener future

What does the profession of a stove builder have to do with a “green job”? Especially in times of ongoing fine dust discussions about stoves and fireplaces, this question naturally arises. But environmentally friendly heating systems have long existed. They not only provide steady heat throughout the year but also supply hot water – all in combination with renewable energy sources.

So the traditional role of the stove builder, who “only” builds stoves, has evolved. Today’s stove builder is much more than that.

Hands and water drops while showering

The profession has developed significantly in recent years and now requires not only craftsmanship and creativity but also a solid understanding of technology and renewable energy – a demanding career that will continue to be in high demand. Career opportunities in this field are also excellent. Those who want to be independent can start their own business, while working as a manager in a fireplace construction company offers plenty of challenges as well.

Future prospects for stove builders – more in demand than ever

Job opportunities for stove builders remain very good. Across Germany, trained stove and air heating builders are in high demand. The same applies to apprenticeships. Many stove construction companies are looking for trainees but cannot find any. The main reason is the low level of awareness of the profession. Many students are simply not familiar with it. With a monthly gross salary ranging from 2,200 to 3,000 euros, a stove builder does not earn excessively, but the pay is fair and stable.

Those who continue their training and become a master craftsman can start their own business as a stove builder and determine both their income and working hours.
An additional reward is the enjoyment of the work itself, the variety of materials and tasks, and a certain degree of freedom in each project. With many customers, stove builders can contribute and implement their own ideas. And when customers have individual wishes, creativity knows no limits. Everything that is feasible and complies with fire safety regulations can be made a reality.

Young craftsman building a stove

The wide variety of materials also makes the profession of stove building so diverse. Natural stone, sandstone, ceramics and steel are among the common materials used. From time to time, there are also special projects that require a great deal of expertise, skill and creativity – truly a profession for doers and craftsmen.

There will continue to be plenty of work in the future. The comfort and warmth of fire remain popular in Germany and will continue to have a place in people’s homes.

Craftsman painting a cladding

When many office jobs have fallen victim to digitalization in 10 or 20 years, the stove builder will still exist. One thing is certain: experience, creativity and true craftsmanship can never be replaced by a machine.

Conclusion

The profession of stove building is demanding and diverse. Anyone looking for a career with excellent future prospects will find it a great choice. Apprentices are in high demand due to the low level of awareness of this profession.
